The prospect of Citizen Corbyn attaining political office is indeed alarming (Jeremy Corbyn must be stopped, Telegraph View August 22). Corbyn-Gate could also act as a touch paper for popular disaffection. The Bard memorably describes Rumour in the hands of the people as a pipe “Of so easy and so plain a stop that the blunt monster with uncounted heads, the still-discordant, wavering multitude, can play upon it.” If it is true that Nature abhors a vacuum, then let us pray that it does not echo to the discordant music of the mob.
